Our process is informed by the fact that our partners have run large agency new business operations at an office level, regionally and globally. There is certainly a right and wrong way to run a pitch and we’ve experienced both, firsthand.
Each review process is customized to our clients’ needs. There is no single way to structure a selection process. That said, a good process always starts with clear objectives and a defined set of decision makers who agree in advance on a set of criteria by which to evaluate an agency. When kicking off a review, the two most important components are the mix of agencies on the short list and the pitch brief. After that, it gets down to conducting a well run and fair review. We work alongside our clients on all of the above.
It is worth mentioning that we are a bit of an anomaly within the agency search community as we are the only search consultants who are also known/established executive recruiters. Our network among senior marketers and agency executives is vast, wide and spans the country. When we oversee an agency review, we access those relationships to gain an inside perspective on the health of an agency, stability of the management team, creative bench, depth of capabilities, as well as the level of commitment to the business being reviewed.
